Recognising local heroes and community champions

At The Birches Care Home in Crieff, Helen, an enthusiastic Activities Coordinator, was recently named a Local Hero for her exceptional work with residents.

Nominated by her MSP, Jim Fairlie, she had the incredible opportunity to visit the Scottish Parliament, where she met both the King and Queen as part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the Scottish Parliament.

Helen’s joy and dedication is infectious as she works to create memorable experiences for those she cares for, and engaging the broader community in meaningful ways. Her recognition demonstrates how rewarding it is to have a such a positive impact on people’s lives working in a HC-One care home.

Walking with purpose: Fundraising for dementia awareness

Yvonne Graham, the Home Manager at Forthbank Care Home in Stirling, has been dedicated to raising funds and awareness for Dementia UK.

This September, Yvonne embarked on a personal mission to walk 30 miles in 30 days, sharing daily updates that inspired colleagues, families, and friends to support her cause. With residents cheering her on and local supporters sponsoring her efforts, she raised over £400 for Dementia UK.

Yvonne’s journey reflects the supportive, community-driven environment at HC-One, where personal passions align with professional roles to make a real difference.

Engaging activities and creative connections

At HC-One’s Highgate Care Home in Uddingston, Glasgow, Activities Coordinator Janine Boyle has was named a finalist for the “Intergenerational Activity Award” at the Dementia Care Awards 2024.

For over eight years, Janine has organised creative activities—from TikTok challenges to partnerships with local schools—that bridge generations and enrich the lives of those living with dementia. Her commitment to person-led care highlights the innovative spirit we nurture at HC-One, where colleagues are encouraged to be curious, creative and think outside the box to make a difference to residents each day.

A legacy of dedication and care

At Balcarres Care Home in Dundee, Lynn McLean, Home Manager, and her Deputy Manager, Vera Scrimgeour, will retire after an inspiring 38-year career in social care—never missing a single day of work. Known lovingly as the “Vera Lynn” duo, they have become beloved pillars of the care community, consistently achieving high Care Inspectorate ratings for outstanding leadership and care.

Their journey is a perfect example of HC-One’s commitment to supporting career longevity, a positive working culture, and personal growth - creating a fulfilling, supportive environment for both residents and colleagues alike.

Team spirit shines at Dundee’s Go for Gold event

In September, HC-One teams from Dundee care homes gathered at the Go for Gold event, celebrating fitness, fun, and community in a spirit of friendly competition.

From boccia to ten-pin bowling, HC-One’s Balcarres Belles team showcased the enthusiasm and teamwork that define our approach to resident wellbeing. This event highlights HC-One’s commitment to creating a workplace culture where team-building and resident engagement go hand in hand, inspiring all who participate to bring joy and energy to their roles.
